Well, drunk posts certainly aren't nearly as fun on an iPhone because they auto correct everything. So it either makes complete sense or absolutely no sense whatsoever... Sorry my grammar is so good. Molly (my cat) is most likely the absolute cutestt adult cat in the world. That is all.

just when i was ready to get back into my journal. . . i changed jobs, moved, and broke my computer. i've been doing everything via phone (paying bills, checking email, etc) for a couple of weeks now. let me tell you. i love my phone, but it does not take the place of a computer. i'm so glad the computer is fixed now and we are back online.
we've moved into the condo. there are still boxes piled around but it's definitely starting to feel like home. the first utility bills have come and we are already going HOLY SHIT. but i guess that's pretty normal when you buy your first house. i'm loving my new appliances. having my own washer and dryer is so awesome. . . and we bought a ridiculously huge refrigerator. :oP
i quit the shaker table. 3 out of my last 4 checks bounced. not really any point working if you don't get paid. i think that's called volunteering. i took a job with the associated press. it's just a part time gig, a few hours a week. i'm given a few recipes, i cook them, make the food look pretty, and they take pictures of it. those pictures go in newspapers across the country. it's really a lot of fun.
my real grown up job is the bakery manager job. the commute is a bit on the long side. but it's all highway and pretty straight. the bakery needs work both in the management sense and the physical sense. while i can only make small changes to the physical sense, i'm making changes to the management sense that have already started to show a difference. i basically run the whole bakery. aside from the books, i do everything. payroll, inventory, ordering, scheduling, deposits, actually managing of the employees and goods we sell. i really like the position a lot. the "kids" that work there are all great (for the most part) and aside from needing direction, very motivated. i'm excited to be a part of it.
my life is so completely different than it was two months ago. it's strange to have so many aspects change so rapidly. it's all been for the good though.

so everything is going incredibly smoothly with the condo this time. amazing how different than last time we tried to buy a house. we settled on paint colors and mostly picked out our appliances. there is a lot of cleaning to be done. i just wanna get in there and get started already. waiting is hard.
so a couple of months ago i applied for a job as a bakery manager. the owner passed away a year or so ago and the place has been kinda just trucking along ever since. there is a part time manager who's just trying to keep things going but doesn't really have the time or energy to devote to the place and the former owner's wife (thus current owner) who doesn't really want to do anything with it. . . but doesn't want to get rid of it. well, they were looking for someone to come in and turn the place around. help it run more efficiently and turn a profit. after a very good interview, they told me that although it was very close, they had chosen someone else who had a little more management experience. but just in case, because it was SO close and they really liked me, they'd like to keep my resume; if it didn't work out they'd call me. they called me yesterday. they want me to start next week. said they should've picked me, she turned out wacky, would i consider it? i meet with them on wednesday and start the following monday.

so we are trying to buy a condo (again). this one is across town. two bedrooms, two full baths (a rare thing in condo world), cathedral ceilings, natural gas, utility room for washer/dryer, central air conditioning, gas fireplace, an attic for storage. . . it was a short sale with the bank. they were asking 20k less than what they were owed on the place. we offered 20k less than that. yesterday we just heard, they countered two grand higher, so we took it. it's definitely a great deal. i'm pretty excited. now to just get financing and all that other bullshit in order. the former occupants took all the appliances in anger of being forced to move. . . so i get to pick out my own brand-new toys.
and brent bought me a new bed for my birthday. . . our old was was rickety and being held up on the side by paint cans. kinda ghetto. new one is metal with bars. . . in case someone needs their hands and/or feet restrained. :oP
current mood: bouncy

so i kind of abandoned my journal for a couple months. not only did i not update anything (what's new about that anyway...) but i didn't read my friends page, or look at anything to do with livejournal. part of it was a break from the computer as a whole, part of it was a crazy fall season at the restaurant, and part of it was exhausted laziness. anyway. . . i'm back. anyone miss me?
as my first act of bloggery, i took moss's quizzy.
Your result for The Chef Test...
Mario Batali64% aptitude, 47% artistry, 46% moxie and 56% command!
You're Mario Batali. Congratulations, for what it's worth. This hapless fat bastard loves cooking for his friends, but it's not going to blow anyone's minds. Nonetheless, he's highly successful and very well liked. I fully expect to catch some hate mail for calling him a 'hapless fat bastard'. He's a nice guy who can cook well. We all wish we knew someone like that, now, don't we? Take The Chef Test at HelloQuizzy
and as my second act of bloggery. . . i guess i'll go read some friends journals. . . i DID miss you guys. in fact, that's why i'm back.

Your result for The Perception Personality Image Test... NFPS - The GuruNature, Foreground, Big Picture, and Shape
You perceive the world with particular attention to nature. You focus on what's in front of you (the foreground) and how that fits into the larger picture. You are also particularly drawn towards the shapes around you. Because of the value you place on nature, you tend to find comfort in more subdued settings and find energy in solitude. You like to deal directly with whatever comes your way without dealing with speculating possibilities or outcomes you can't control. You are in tune with all that is around you and understand your life as part of a larger whole. You prefer a structured environment within which to live and you like things to be predictable. On Friday night, Brent and I celebrated our 5th anniversary (which was actually Saturday) by going to Dunaway Restaurant for dinner. Well, after discussing what to have for dinner, we opted for the 9 course chef's choice tasting menu. I will recall the courses as best I can:
-Prior to the first: a plate of bread, similar to a ciabatta, served with a citrus butter. -First: oyster on the half shell, served on a bed of salt with pickled shallots. -Second: a summer salad of pattypan squash, cukes, zucchini, and greens with toasted sunflower seeds, aged balsamic and olive oil. -Third: seared scallop with braised oxtail, salsify, crispy pork, and a stout reduction. -Fourth: poached lobster tail with cumin roasted cauliflower. -Fifth: fried, deboned leg of chicken with english peas, spaetzle, forest mushrooms, and gravy. -Sixth: trio of duck: duck confit, seared breast, and foie gras with a plum sauce, fig, and curried garbanzo beans. -Seventh: a mellow and richly molded blue cheese with red onion relish and poppy crackers. -Eighth: watermelon sorbet over a watermelon and basil salad in a pool of honeydew puree. -Final: a warm chocolate cake with sauteed cherries, orange creme anglais, and roasted orange ice cream.
Opinion: OMFG. 2 1/2 hours of delicious. My only desires: the crackers were too thick and needed a toastier element (maybe sesame rather than poppy), and I wanted an entremezzo to refresh and cleanse the palate, so I'd switch the eighth course to the fifth position.

so i've been back from ireland for about a week now. i'm an awesome updater. i had a wicked good time. i loved it there. as much as i didn't enjoy the food (and i'm a total foodie), and i didn't enjoy my companions on the bus, i would highly recommend a bus tour of the country if you consider going. the roads and cars and people driving are so very different from ours. . . i wouldn't want to drive it myself. the roads are crazy narrow and winding like you wouldn't believe. and you'd have to keep muttering "stay left, stay left" the entire time. . . not to mention you'd never get to actually see any of the incredibly beautiful country: take a bus.
the weather really rocked my socks off. it was 60-70 the entire time. rained almost every day but not for very long, and not very hard. the yearly temperatures are 40-80. people talk about all the green in ireland but you don't really understand what they are talking about until you see it. it's not that everything is green (it certainly is mostly green here in NH too), it's how many shades of green and how far you can see green. it's all fields; the whole country looks like a patchwork quilt.
the people truly are incredibly friendly and hospitable. the history is rich, and the culture is steeped in it. overall, a great experience. highly recommended if you ever get the chance.

man, my life seems so fucking busy all of a sudden. --i just started physical therapy twice a week for my sprained ankle that hasn't finished healing yet.
--sunday, i'm meeting with a bride regarding a wedding cake (wedding isn't until october, thankfully).
--monday morning i'm driving my mum to a rather serious stomach surgery. which, of course, is an emotional roller coaster in and of itself. plus a month long recovery time with which she'll need much assistance.
--next saturday i start my new job. i'm going to start off part time and decrease my other job hours as this one increases. . . but for a little while i'll have three jobs to balance.
--brent is in the process of switching his hours for a whole new schedule at work. that will be good in the long run, i'm sure, but i'm not sure when we'll see each other. and in the mean time schedules are confusing.
--then of course there is the normal mess of usual appointments and "social"/family events. mother's day, my older brother's birthday, doctors appointments, etc.
--the restaurant i'm at now is going under (hence the new job). . . i don't think i've written about that train wreck, but it is one.
somebody flipped the stress switch on.

2:56 pm - I GOT THE JOB!!
|
|
it's at the shaker table restaurant (of canterbury shaker village). i'll be a production chef/baker/pastry chef. i don't really have a concise title. i'll be doing the breads and desserts for the restaurant, catering, and the little store we have. i'll also be doing all the sandwiches for the little store. and i'm in charge of the walk-ins. (part of me thinks: weee. . . cleaning up other people's messes; the other part knows that i really like doing that kind of organizing.) it starts in a month and a half. part time at first, then full time with ample overtime available. probation period is 30 days, after which i get a raise (or fired). and the job goes until the end of the season, october or november).

saturday i had a wedding cake appointment. it's my little brother's friend from work. . . he got me the order: "she wants a seven decker, with white/vanilla frosting, with pink and purple roses, in the shape of a nude man and woman, for 50 people". well none of that makes very much sense so i told her that i definitely needed to meet with her. so we planned this appointment for a month ago. then she calls me that morning to tell me that she's not going to be home, can we reschedule. sure, no problem. appointment was scheduled for last week, i called and rescheduled because there was a snow storm. soooo. . . this week, i arrive at her house. . . and she's not home. i spoke with her mother-in-law to be and she said that they had gone shopping. she still hasn't called me. . .
